On our 40th wedding anniversary getaway to the hills of North Carolina, we brainstormed names for this winemaking venture. David had been reading Mark Twain's short novel "A Horse's Tale," in which Soldier Boy, Buffalo Bill Cody's trusty mount, provides a narrative account of his time. Our pond has a small planting of horse tail (Equisetum hyemale) and these two items provided inspiration.
We built a hobby-boutique wine label producing limited quantities of hand-crafted wines for personal tastes and pleasure. Decidedly not for the mass market or for public sale. At least, not yet.
Wine making is both art and science. In the end though, you have to enjoy what you have made. That's the only true measure of quality.
Wines are produced at our winery in South Carolina with high quality grapes sourced from various AVA regions in California and Washington states. Grapes grown in Yakima Valley, WA, Lodi, and Paso Robles, CA. Some small quantities of wine are made with Chambourcin grown on our property.
